KA-BAR USMC "Black Fighting/Utility" Knife with Kraton Handle
Material and Construction
The blade, with a length of 180 mm (7 inches), is made from the legendary 1095 Cro-Van carbon steel. Please note, this is not stainless steel! This material was chosen for its phenomenal toughness and ability to hold an edge even under abuse. To prevent rust, the blade is coated with a durable black epoxy powder. The blade features the classic "Clip Point" shape with a fuller (blood groove), which lightens the structure and increases rigidity.
A major upgrade over the historical original is the handle. Instead of leather discs, this model uses Kraton G—a thermoplastic elastomer that won't slip even in a wet hand, is unaffected by sweat, blood, or chemicals, and is virtually indestructible. The handle is capped with a massive steel pommel that can be used as a hammer in an emergency.
The History of the Name "Ka-Bar"
Legend has it that the name originated from a letter sent by a trapper to Union Cutlery, describing how their knife saved his life during a bear attack. The letter read "Kill a bear," but the writing was smudged, and only "Ka Bar" was legible. The company adopted this name, and the rest is history. This knife has served in the Pacific, Korea, Vietnam, and modern conflicts.
Carbon Steel Maintenance
1095 carbon steel is the king of cutting performance, but it requires care:
- Protection: Keep the blade dry. Wipe it down after use and apply a thin layer of oil (e.g., gun oil or mineral oil), especially on the edge itself where the coating is absent.
- Sharpening: This steel is relatively easy to sharpen. Use whetstones and maintain an angle of approximately 20 degrees.
- Sharpening a Knife Correctly
- Sheath: The knife comes with a high-quality leather sheath. Leather can absorb moisture, so remove the knife from the sheath for long-term storage.
