Visby Brigandine Type I – Suede Coat of Plates 1361
The Legacy of Gotland's Defenders
This type of armour, technically known as a Coat of Plates, is one of the most famous finds from the mass graves of the Battle of Visby. Archaeologists classify this specific design as Type I. Its brilliance lies in its simplicity and efficiency. While it looks like a riveted leather garment on the outside, it conceals a sophisticated system of steel plates inside. These are riveted to the outer layer in a way that they partially overlap, providing protection comparable to a cuirass but with much greater flexibility.
Construction and Materials
The outer shell is made of high-quality, sturdy suede leather, giving the armour a period-correct, battle-worn appearance. The bottom hem is decoratively dagged (scalloped), a style highly fashionable in the 14th century. Inside the armour, you will find a system of vertical and horizontal plates made of mild steel with a thickness of approximately 1.7 mm (approx. 16 gauge). This thickness is sufficient for most historical fencing activities.
The armour is put on over the head (like a poncho) and fastens at the back with leather straps and buckles. This system allows you to adjust the fit exactly to your body shape and the layers worn underneath. Thanks to the split design and plate arrangement, you can bend and turn comfortably.
Usage and Safety Warning
Although the armour is made of 1.7 mm steel, it is primarily designed for stage combat, LARP, and historical reenactment. For full-contact sports like Buhurt (HMB, Battle of the Nations), we recommend specialized sporting equipment, as the extreme stress in grappling could damage the suede carrier layer. To ensure the armour fits well and protects you effectively, we strongly recommend wearing a padded gambeson underneath. This will distribute impact energy and increase your comfort.

Care Instructions
To keep this armour serving you for years, give it a little care after every event:
- Leather: Clean the suede with a soft brush. If the armour gets wet, let it dry naturally at room temperature, away from direct heat sources, to prevent the leather from cracking.
- Steel: The inner plates can corrode due to sweat or humidity. Check them regularly and treat them with preservation oil (e.g., WD-40 or equivalent).
