Traditional Horse Bow Black Horse in Ash Wood with Black Fibreglass, 50"

Perfect Symmetry and Correct Grip

The construction of the Black Horse bow is perfectly symmetrical. In practice, this means it doesn't matter which limb points towards the sky and which points to the ground. However, to ensure optimal performance and prevent damage, you must observe one crucial rule: the text written on the bow's limb must always face towards you (the shooter). This is the only way to be absolutely sure you are holding the weapon correctly and fully utilising its dynamic power. The bow comes supplied with a high-quality, hand-woven Dacron string, guaranteeing durability and consistent performance.

The Art of Instinctive Archery

Instinctive shooting is the most natural form of archery, relying entirely on your innate hand-eye coordination. Because this bow has no arrow rest or sights, you shoot the arrow directly off the back of your bow hand. When aiming, you keep both eyes open, fixed entirely on the target. You firmly push the hand holding the bow towards the target, while smoothly drawing the string with your other hand back to your facial anchor point. It’s all about practice, focus, and becoming one with the bow.

The Origins and Purpose of Horse Bows

Historically, horse bows were developed by nomadic tribes specifically for shooting from horseback. This is exactly why they are short, highly dynamic, and easy to manoeuvre in tight spaces. Today, these bows are incredibly popular for 3D archery, historical re-enactments (LARP), and recreational outdoor shooting. An interesting fact is that due to the lack of an arrow rest and the symmetrical riser, the bow retains a wonderfully purist aesthetic that instantly transports you back to the era of ancient and medieval warriors.

How to Care for Your Bow

  • Unstring after use: Always unstring the bow when you are finished shooting. This allows the limbs to rest and ensures they don't lose their tension and power.
  • Wax the string: Regularly apply a dedicated bowstring wax to your Dacron string. This prevents fraying and significantly extends its lifespan.
  • Proper storage: Store your bow in a dry place, ideally laying it flat or hanging it safely by the unstrung string or loops.

What to Absolutely Avoid

The worst enemy of any bow is dry firing. Never draw and release the string without an arrow properly nocked! All the kinetic energy that would normally propel the arrow forward will instead violently return into the bow's limbs, which can lead to immediate snapping or permanent structural damage. Furthermore, do not expose the bow to extreme heat—never leave it in a hot car during summer or right next to a radiator, as this can cause the fibreglass lamination to delaminate and fail.

Recommended Accessories for Your Setup

To ensure a safe and truly authentic shooting experience, I highly recommend adding a few essentials to your kit. You definitely shouldn't be without a quality leather arm guard (bracer), which will protect your forearm from string slap. For drawing the string comfortably, choose a leather shooting glove or a traditional finger tab. This style of bow performs best with wooden arrows fletched with natural feathers, as they will glide smoothly and effortlessly over the back of your hand. Finally, a soft canvas or fleece bow sleeve is ideal for safe and stylish transport.
