Cinematic Leather Back Scabbard with Baldric of the Scottish Hero
Cinematic Style and Historical Reality
While drawing a sword from the back is an absolute classic in fantasy worlds and on the silver screen, from the perspective of true history and human biomechanics, it is a myth. The human arm is simply not long enough to smoothly draw a long blade from a rigid back scabbard. Therefore, this harness is designed primarily for the comfortable transport of the weapon. The sword is secured in the scabbard with a leather thong tied at the throat so it does not slip out when you run or bend over. When ordering, you can choose over which shoulder the sword hilt should protrude (standard for right-handers is over the right shoulder). The scabbard and the baldric itself are custom-made to measure. You will need to provide the dimensions of your weapon and the diagonal circumference of your torso so the harness fits you perfectly.
Care and Maintenance of Leather Gear
High-quality smooth cowhide is a long-lasting material if properly cared for. We recommend treating the entire scabbard and baldric at least twice a year with a colourless leather balm, ideally one containing natural beeswax. The balm deeply nourishes the leather, keeps it supple, and protects it from moisture. If your gear gets wet at an event, never dry it near an open fire or on a hot radiator. The leather could harden and crack. Let it air dry naturally at room temperature. Minor variations in colour and surface texture are natural characteristics of leather, giving each piece a unique patina.
Safety Warning
As the scabbard is made entirely of leather and does not contain a rigid wooden core, it is intended only for blunt weapons (for historical fencing, LARP, or cosplay). Never insert a sword with a sharply honed blade. The sharp edge could slice through the leather during movement and cause severe injury to your back or neck. Also, never attempt to forcefully draw the sword from your back while it is secured by the safety thong.
Recommended Costume Accessories
To accompany this back harness, we highly recommend acquiring a high-quality replica of a Scottish Claymore sword (in a blunt version) and a sturdy leather waist belt to secure the lower part of your attire, as the waist belt shown in the photographs is not included.
