Historical Bolts and Their Significance

In the Middle Ages, the production of crossbow bolts (often called "quarrels") was a highly specialized craft. Unlike long archery arrows, crossbow bolts had to be short and heavy to absorb the massive energy released by the bow and to penetrate even thick plate armour. This replica, with its wooden shaft and natural fletching, reflects the equipment used by castle guards and town militias during the High Gothic period. Interestingly, the vanes were often attached at a slight angle to cause the bolt to spin in flight, which significantly increased stability and accuracy.

Usage and Maintenance Guide

This bolt is intended for decorative purposes. If you place it in the string of a decorative crossbow, ensure that an accidental shot is not fired. Handle the natural feathers with care—avoid moisture, which could damage the structure of the feathers and cause them to clump together. We recommend wiping the metal tip occasionally with a soft cloth and a drop of gun oil to preserve its appearance and protect it from rust. Never use this bolt for actual shooting at hard targets, as it may shatter and cause injury to bystanders.

This bolt pairs excellently with our collection of decorative wooden crossbows or a stylish quiver, where several pieces can be displayed together.
