Narrow Gothic Leather Belt Morrow with Decorative Fittings, 14th Century
Historical Context and Belt Usage
In the 14th century, narrow leather belts were highly popular among both men and women. They served to elegantly gather outer garments like the cotte or surcoat, emphasizing the silhouette of the wearer. At the same time, they fulfilled a highly practical function – they were used to hang leather pouches, medieval daggers, purses, or keys. The buckle and the strap end (chape) on this belt are carefully cast based on historical artifacts, giving the belt a faithful and authentic medieval appearance. The metal fittings are decorated with subtle geometric engravings that are typical of the High Gothic period.
How to Properly Wear and Maintain Your Belt
Historical belts from this period were often intentionally worn long. The loose end was simply passed under the belt behind the buckle and elegantly draped down, creating the characteristic medieval belt knot. The leather of the belt is sturdy, full-grain cowhide, decorated along the edges with an embossed border line. The connection near the buckle is further reinforced with sturdy hand-stitching.
To maintain its perfect flexibility, durability, and color richness, we recommend occasionally treating the belt with a quality leather balm containing beeswax. Never dry the leather near a direct heat source, such as an open fire or a radiator – it could harden, crack, and become irreparably damaged. This belt is primarily designed as a clothing accessory for historical events. For safety reasons, never use it for excessive load-bearing, suspending heavy weights, climbing, or as a safety strap.
A period leather pouch for small coins and a replica of a medieval dagger with a leather scabbard go perfectly with this Gothic belt, helping you create a complete and functional historical set.
