Gothic Dagger
Appearance and Construction:
The dominant feature is the double-edged blade, measuring roughly 44 cm (about 17.3 inches) in length. The blade has a diamond cross-section, tapering smoothly to a sharp point. This shape ensures effective thrusting capabilities. A maker's mark or emblem is stamped onto the upper part of the blade, near the crossguard.
The crossguard, approximately 13 cm (about 5.1 inches) long, features a characteristic Gothic design with arms curving elegantly towards the blade. This type of guard (similar to Type 6 in Oakeshott's typology for swords) offered hand protection.
The handle is wrapped with brown leather and a twisted pair of wires, ensuring a firm and comfortable hold. The dagger is finished with a robust disc pommel (similar to Types I or J in Oakeshott's typology), which balances the weapon and allows for more effective handling.
The overall design strongly evokes the weapons used by knights and soldiers in the 14th and 15th centuries. Its proportions and shape resemble a scaled-down version of the hand-and-a-half swords of that era.
Available Variants:
You can order this dagger in two versions:
- Sharp Variant: A fully sharpened blade, suitable for collection purposes or potentially for cutting tests (tameshigiri) under strict safety conditions.
- Blunt/Rebated Variant: Featuring a safe edge and rounded tip, ideal for historical fencing, stage combat, reenactment, as part of a costume for LARP events, or as a safe decorative piece.
Potential Uses:
- Historical Fencing and Reenactment (Blunt Version): Thanks to its dimensions and historical appearance, it's an excellent choice for combat practice or as part of your gear for historical events.
- Costume Accessory (Blunt Version): Perfectly complements your knight, man-at-arms, or noble attire for fantasy events, LARPs, or historical festivals.
- Collector's Item (Sharp or Blunt Version): An elegant addition to a collection of edged weapons, notable for its Gothic design.
- Decoration (Sharp or Blunt Version): An impressive decorative item for interiors with a historical touch.
Safety Guidelines:
- Always handle even the blunt version with the utmost care, as if it were sharp. It is still a piece of steel capable of causing injury.
- Never point the weapon at people or animals.
- When handling, especially during fencing practice, ensure ample safe space around you and use appropriate protective gear (gloves, mask, gambeson, etc.).
- The sharp variant is a real weapon. Keep it out of reach of children and unauthorised persons. Store it securely and regularly maintain the blade with oil to prevent rust.
- Familiarise yourself with the current legislation regarding the ownership, carrying, and use of bladed articles in your location.
This Gothic dagger is a well-crafted piece that combines historical authenticity with practical utility for various activities, whether you choose the sharp or the blunt variant.
