Construction and Usage

This shield is made of steel and is richly plated with antique brass, giving it an authentic bronze appearance. The surface is intentionally distressed (battle-worn finish) to evoke the impression of a weapon proven in combat. The dominant feature is the embossed Lambda (Λ). The back of the shield is fully lined and covered, increasing comfort against the arm. The grip is designed in the classic Argive style – you slide your forearm through a wide leather strap (porpax) and grip the handle near the rim (antilabe).

Given its extreme weight (over 20 lbs / 9 kg) and material, we primarily recommend it as:

• Exclusive Decoration: Mounted on a wall, this shield will be an unmissable feature of any interior.
• Cosplay and Photography: For short-term wear during photoshoots or at conventions (provided you have sufficient physical fitness).
• Strength Training: Handling such a heavy load on one arm is a genuine challenge for your muscles.

History and Symbolism

Although a movie replica, it is based on the historical shield known as the aspis or hoplon. Real Spartan shields were also heavy (around 15-17 lbs), but they were made of wood and only faced with a thin layer of bronze. This all-metal model is a tribute to Frank Miller's visual style. The Lambda (Λ) symbol on the front refers to Lacedaemon, the region ruled by Sparta. Legend has it that the Spartans began using this symbol during the Peloponnesian Wars to be recognised in the heat of battle and to strike fear into enemies with their reputation as invincible warriors.

Care and Maintenance

Even though the shield has a brass finish, the core is steel. To ensure it lasts for ages, please follow these principles:

• Rust Protection: Regularly treat metal parts with a preservative oil (e.g., WD-40 or similar gun oil), especially if you touch the shield with bare hands, as sweat can be corrosive.
• Leather Care: Occasionally treat the leather straps and handle with a leather balm to keep them supple and prevent cracking.
• Storage: Store the shield in a dry place. Moisture is the enemy of both steel and leather.

Safety Warning

We warn you that this shield is extremely heavy. Exercise increased caution when handling it to prevent it from slipping and causing injury (dropping it on your foot would be very painful). The shield is sold as a decorative item. It is not intended for contact fencing, historical reenactment fighting, or LARP combat. The steel edge could seriously injure an opponent or damage other weapons upon impact.
