Roman Pugio Dagger with Wooden Hilt and Scabbard

Are you looking for the right sidearm to perfectly complement your legionary armour? The Roman Pugio Dagger is an essential piece of equipment for every soldier of the Roman Empire, from the rank-and-file legionary to the centurion. This replica catches the eye at first glance with its simple yet functional aesthetic. The combination of cold steel, the warm tone of wood, and shiny brass makes it a piece that will look absolutely authentic on your belt (cingulum). Whether you are heading to a costume party, a theatre performance, or a historical parade, this pugio will give you the proper authority of the conquerors of the ancient world.

Historical Context and Construction

In ancient Rome, the Pugio was much more than just a backup weapon. It was a tool for daily needs, a dining knife, but in the crush of battle turmoil, also the last hope for survival. Its origin, like that of the Gladius sword, goes back to Hispania (Spain). While the Gladius spread quickly through the legions, the pugio became a standard part of equipment on a massive scale around the time of Julius Caesar and the Early Empire (1st century BC – 3rd century AD).

This replica offers a massive leaf-shaped blade, which is typical for Roman daggers. It is made of carbon steel. The handle is turned from wood and has a specific anatomical shape with distinct ribbing, ensuring a firm grip. Included is a wooden scabbard covered in black leatherette. It is reinforced with brass fittings, which not only protect the dagger but also allow for easy suspension on a belt thanks to the side rings.

Usage and Safety

It is important to keep in mind that this is a costume dagger. Although the construction is solid, it is not intended for contact fencing, stage combat blade-on-blade, or throwing. Such usage could lead to damage to the weapon or injury. The dagger serves primarily as a decoration or costume accessory (Living History, LARP, theatre).

Dagger Care

To ensure your pugio lasts a long time and keeps looking great, dedicate some care to it:

  • The carbon steel blade is not stainless. Store it in a dry place and regularly treat it with preservation oil (e.g., WD-40 or gun oil), especially after touching it with bare hands.
  • Brass parts may develop a patina over time. If you prefer a high gloss, you can polish them with a metal polish (e.g., polishing wadding).
  • The leatherette scabbard can simply be wiped with a damp cloth; do not use products designed for genuine leather, as they could damage the synthetic surface.
