Gilded Kogai with Relief Decoration
Do you feel that your Katana or Wakizashi is missing something to be perfect? If your guard (tsuba) and scabbard (saya) have slots for accessories, then you are likely missing this very Kogai. This traditional Japanese tool was an essential part of a samurai's equipment. It is not a knife in the true sense of the word, but a multifunctional pin or skewer that was inserted into a special pocket on the sword scabbard. This specific version boasts a gilded surface and detailed relief decoration on the handle, adding a touch of luxury and historical authenticity to your weapon. Further product information ...
Gilded Kogai with Relief Decoration – Traditional Katana Accessory
History and Usage of the Kogai
The Kogai (literally "sword needle") was historically used for many purposes that might not occur to you today. Primarily, it served samurai to adjust their hairstyle under their helmet, clean their ears, or as a universal tool, for example, to manipulate knots on armour. It often formed a pair with a small utility knife called a Kogatana (Kozuka). Together, they created a set called Mitokoromono (fittings of three places), matched with the other elements of the sword.
This replica is made of non-ferrous metal and coated with a layer imitating gold. It is intended primarily as a decorative accessory to complete the look of your sword. Slide it into the appropriate slot in the tsuba and scabbard and elevate your replica to a new level.
Product Care
To keep the gilding shiny for as long as possible, please follow these rules:
- The Kogai serves only as a decoration; do not use it as a pry bar, screwdriver, or throwing weapon.
- Clean the surface only with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use aggressive chemical cleaners or abrasive pastes, which could damage the gilded layer.
- Protect from moisture to prevent oxidation of the base metal.
