German Peasant War Morning Star Mace – Decorative Replica (1473)

A Symbol of Rebellion and Brute Force

This type of weapon was popular in the 15th and 16th centuries for its simplicity and brutal effectiveness against plate armour. The replica features a wooden handle with a hexagonal cross-section, fitted with a decorative plate bearing the year 1473. The transition between wood and metal is adorned with a leather fringe, giving the weapon a rustic appearance. The metal head, with four massive spikes and one top spike, is made of a metal alloy with a dark finish imitating forged iron. There is a chain loop at the end of the handle, which historically served to secure the weapon to the wrist so the warrior wouldn't lose it in the heat of battle.

Historical Context and Usage

Weapons of this type became infamous particularly during the German Peasant Wars (Bauernkrieg) in the early 16th century, but the date 1473 on the handle refers to earlier unrest, such as the Bundschuh movement. Peasants often modified agricultural tools or had village blacksmiths create simple but heavy weapons capable of crushing even expensive knightly armour. Today, you can use this mace primarily as a costume prop for characters like robber knights, rebels, or insurgent peasants, or as a striking interior decoration.

Care and Safety Warning

To ensure the mace lasts a long time, keep it dry. You can occasionally treat the wooden part with beeswax or furniture polish. Simply wipe the metal parts with a dry cloth to remove moisture and oil from your hands.

Important Warning: This is exclusively a decorative item. The head is made of a brittle alloy, not hardened steel. The weapon is not designed for any type of contact combat, reenactment fighting, or striking hard objects. Impact could cause the spikes to break off or the head to shatter, which could cause injury to you or others. Use it only as a costume accessory or display piece.
