Aluminium Threaded Insert

Modern archery is all about versatility, and this unassuming aluminium threaded insert is the key element that opens the door to a modular system. While historical arrow points were glued on "forever", thanks to this insert, you can switch between target points of different weights or swap them for hunting broadheads on a single carbon shaft in seconds. The insert is glued into the hollow of the carbon arrow and serves as an anchor for all standard screw-in points. It is made of a lightweight aluminium alloy, so it minimally affects the arrow's front-of-center (FOC) balance, yet provides a solid connection that withstands impacts into the target butt. Aluminium Threaded Insert for Carbon Arrows

Installation and Craftsmanship

Installing the insert is easy but requires precision. The insert has an outer diameter on the insertion part of 6.12 mm and is finished with a wider rim (7.45 mm), which rests against the face of the arrow tube and prevents the insert from slipping inside. For gluing into carbon, I recommend two-part epoxy adhesive (for a permanent bond) or special low-temperature hot melt glue, which allows for future replacement. Caution: Carbon is sensitive to high temperatures, so when using hot melt, heat only the insert, never the arrow tube itself!

History: The End of Disposable Arrows

In the Middle Ages, when a point broke or became blunt, it often meant the end of the entire arrow or laborious work for the blacksmith and fletcher in re-binding and gluing a new point with pitch and sinew. The introduction of threaded inserts in the 20th century was a revolution for archery comparable to the invention of the compound bow. It allowed for the mass production of identical points and gave archers the ability to "tune" their arrows exactly according to the conditions of the competition or hunt.

Maintenance and Safety

To ensure a safe connection:

  • Check the Bond: After a series of shots (especially into harder targets), check that the insert has not loosened in the tube. A "clicking" sound upon impact can indicate a broken glue bond.
  • Cleanliness: Before screwing in the point, ensure there is no dirt or glue residue in the insert thread that would prevent the point from tightening flush against the rim.
  • Compatibility: Carefully measure the inner diameter of your carbon tubes before purchasing. This insert is intended for standard diameters corresponding to the stated dimensions.

Do not forget to add suitable insert glue and a set of screw-in points to your basket.
