The Pugio was the personal sidearm of Roman soldiers, worn on their belt (cingulum). Although the primary weapon was the gladius sword, the pugio served in close combat, as a daily utility tool, and was also a status symbol. Richly decorated pieces, like this replica, were particularly afforded by officers—centurions and legates—to display their wealth and rank. The SPQR acronym symbolized their devotion to Rome, whose power rested on the union of the Senate and the People.
