Roman Pugio Dagger SPQR, Decorative Replica

A Design Full of Roman Symbolism

Every detail of this dagger and its scabbard tells a story. The pommel of the hilt is shaped into the form of an Eagle's head (Aquila), the most sacred symbol of a Roman legion. Both the hilt and the perfectly matching metal scabbard are decorated with a combination of silver and gold colors featuring elaborate ornamentation. On the scabbard, you will find medallions depicting the Capitoline Wolf nursing the founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus. The centerpiece of the wide blade is the golden etching of the acronym SPQR (Senatus Populusque Romanus – The Senate and People of Rome), the official emblem of the eternal city.

Modern-Day Uses: From Collection to Costume

This replica is ideal for a variety of occasions:

  • An Impressive Decoration: Display it on your desk, in your library, or as part of a larger collection to give your space a touch of ancient history.
  • An Essential Costume Accessory: Planning to attend a historical festival, LARP event, or party as a Roman legionary, centurion, or even a senator? This dagger is the perfect accessory to enhance the authenticity of your costume.
  • A Great Gift: Looking for an original gift for a fan of ancient Rome, history, or military artifacts? This dagger is a guaranteed success.

History of the Pugio Dagger

The Pugio was the personal sidearm of Roman soldiers, worn on their belt (cingulum). Although the primary weapon was the gladius sword, the pugio served in close combat, as a daily utility tool, and was also a status symbol. Richly decorated pieces, like this replica, were particularly afforded by officers—centurions and legates—to display their wealth and rank. The SPQR acronym symbolized their devotion to Rome, whose power rested on the union of the Senate and the People.

How to Care for Your Dagger

To keep your Roman dagger shining:

  • Regularly wipe it with a dry, soft cloth to remove dust and fingerprints.
  • To protect the metal parts, you can apply a very thin layer of conservation oil.
  • Store it in a dry place, ideally in the included scabbard.

Important Notice

This is a purely decorative item. The blade is made of 420 stainless steel and is not intended for combat, cutting, stabbing, or any other practical use. It is a display replica.

I have a SPQR knife in my possession and I was wondering if there is any worth to it. It is the same as the one pictured above. Thank you for any information you can give me on it. Judy
