Chinese Dao Broadsword – Niuweidao for Kung Fu
Training Weapon for Forms and Show
This sword is designed primarily as a practice tool. Its blade is blunt, so you don't have to worry about accidental cuts during handling. It is made from a single piece of metal, giving it the necessary stiffness – this is not a thin, wobbly "wushu foil" that snaps loudly when swung, but a solid blade with a spine thickness of approx. 6 mm (0.24 inches). The handle is wrapped in imitation leather for a firm grip and finished with a solid pommel featuring attached coloured ribbons. These are not just for decoration; during practice, they visually help you track the arc of your cut and the fluidity of your movements, while adding a dynamic effect to your performance.
Historical Context: The Sword of the People
The Niuweidao type saber emerged in China during the late Qing Dynasty (19th century). Interestingly, unlike other types (such as the Liuyedao), it was never issued as a standard military weapon. It was the weapon of civilians, caravan guards, rebels, and martial arts masters. Its broad blade, which flares out towards the tip, was designed to inflict devastating cutting wounds even with less force applied. In Chinese martial arts sayings, the Dao is known as the "General of all weapons" because it is faster to learn than the technically more demanding straight sword, the Jian.

Care and Safety Instructions
Although this is a training weapon, it requires care. Wipe the blade with a dry cloth after every session to remove sweat and moisture, and apply a thin layer of preserving oil (e.g., gun oil or WD-40). This will prevent corrosion. Keep the decorative ribbons clean and dry.
Important Warning: This product is a replica of a bladed weapon intended for practising forms (Kata/Taolu) or as a decoration. While the construction is sturdy, the material is not hardened for direct steel-on-steel contact. It is not intended for contact fencing, reenactment combat, or cutting hard objects. Such use risks irreversible damage to the blade (notches, breakage) and potential injury. Use it strictly for non-contact training.
For a complete training experience, we recommend adding a suitable carrying case to your order to protect the sword during transport.
