High Leather Viking Boots Oseberg with Asymmetrical Leather Toggle Fastening
Historical Context and Adjusting the Fit
Shoes with asymmetrical lacing and fastenings using various toggles and buttons were among the most popular styles of the Early Middle Ages, especially among Norse and Germanic tribes. This taller model, with a height of approximately 18 cm (7.1 in), excellently stabilises the ankle. If, upon trying them on, you find the boot too tight or too loose around the shin or instep, you can easily adjust it. Simply untie the knots on the leather straps that secure the leather buttons to the shoe (you can use an awl or a thick nail for easier untying) and shorten or lengthen the strap accordingly. This will ensure the boot embraces your leg precisely.
Material, Colours, and Leather Care
The footwear is carefully sewn from high-quality cowhide and comes factory-treated with a beeswax balm. This balm softens, impregnates, and gives the leather a characteristic patina. To maintain the long lifespan of the hide, it is essential to regularly treat the boots with available leather care products. Waxes, leather oils, or standard shoe polish work excellently, additionally allowing you to easily cover any scuffs from regular wear and marching in the field. Never dry the boots near a direct heat source, such as an open fire or a radiator, as the leather would irreversibly harden and crack.
By default, we supply the leather in black, dark brown, and light brown (natural) colours. Other colour shades are achieved by applying a special topcoat dye. Please keep in mind that this topcoat shares the natural properties of patent leathers – over time and due to the stress on the material, small cracks may appear, or the coating may crumble locally in the flex zones of the toe. This is a normal phenomenon to be expected. However, for occasional historical celebrations, the coated finish will serve excellently.
Sole and Movement Safety
The sole of this footwear is constructed by layering and stitching, which grants the shoe significantly higher durability and stability compared to purely historical thin leather soles. Nevertheless, exercise extra caution on wet grass, mud, and smooth modern surfaces, where the smoother bottom area may slip.
If you choose the custom-made variant and are accustomed to wearing orthotic insoles, it is absolutely necessary to send them to us in advance. The standard insole is firmly built-in in this model and cannot be removed. Your orthotic insole must therefore be precisely fitted into your shoe during production.
