Women's Historical Tavern Maid Costume In Cotton Duvetyne
Layered Workwear Of The 16th And 17th Centuries
The historical inspiration for this practical workwear comes from the everyday fashion of European commoners in the 16th and 17th centuries. While the nobility wore uncomfortable corsets and heavy brocade dresses, the poorer social classes preferred layered garments made from available natural materials. The costume consists of three parts. The base is a white cotton chemise with wide sleeves, which are gathered at the wrists into elegant laced cuffs. Thanks to the sewn-in elastic around the neckline, it can be worn classically on the shoulders or alluringly pulled off the shoulders. The wide, long skirt features a practical elastic waistband, ensuring a perfect fit. The outer layer is a bodice made of high-quality cotton duvetyne, which visually mimics velvet. The front lacing guarantees comfortable and sufficient tightening around the torso.
This Tavern Maid Madeline costume is custom-made in other colours upon request according to these fabric swatches. Please note your desired colour in your order in the comment field. Care Of Historical Clothing And Safety Instructions
To ensure this beautiful costume serves you for a long time, proper care is required. We recommend washing it in a washing machine on a delicate cycle at a maximum temperature of 30 °C (86 °F). Completely avoid the use of bleaches and harsh chemicals. Do not dry the garment in a tumble dryer to prevent the cotton fibres from shrinking; instead, let it air-dry laid flat. Ironing is possible on a medium heat setting; however, the duvetyne bodice should exclusively be ironed on the reverse side to avoid damaging its velvet-like surface. Please note that cotton is a highly flammable natural material. Therefore, exercise extreme caution near open flames, for example when cooking at a period hearth or near a campfire. Further cleaning and maintenance instructions can be found here.
