Traditional White Cossack Papakha Hat From Genuine Sheepskin
A Symbol Of Honor And Resilience Of Caucasian Peoples
Historically, the papakha is a traditional male headgear widespread throughout the Caucasus. Later, particularly during the 18th and 19th centuries, this imposing hat was adopted by the Russian army and became an inseparable symbol of the Cossack hosts. For a Cossack, the papakha was not just protection from frost or the summer sun, but primarily a symbol of honor and manly pride. It was removed only in church, when taking an oath, or at a funeral. The presented model, featuring a striking red cloth top overlaid with a black cross (often symbolizing the Orthodox faith or affiliation with a specific host), references the typical uniform of the Kuban Cossacks.
Craftsmanship And Technical Parameters
The headgear is precisely made from genuine, undyed sheepskin, which excels in its natural density and insulating properties. The top of the hat is sewn from sturdy red broadcloth, reinforced with cross-stitching using black trim. The inside of the hat features a comfortable lining for all-day wear during events.

Fur Care And Safety Guidelines
Natural fur requires specific care to maintain its fluffy appearance. Under no circumstances should the papakha be washed in a washing machine or dried in a tumble dryer! If it gets slightly dirty, carefully brush out the dirt with a soft brush. If the hat gets wet (for example, from snow or rain), never dry it in the immediate vicinity of an open fire or on a hot radiator, as the leather would irreversibly harden and crack. Always dry it slowly at room temperature and air it out regularly.
From a safety perspective, remember that while natural wool is less flammable than synthetics, heightened caution is still required when handling open flames (campfires, torches) to prevent the long fur hairs from getting singed.
Recommended Accessories
To create a perfectly authentic Cossack look, we highly recommend acquiring the traditional long coat called a cherkeska with cartridge pockets (gazyrs), a wide leather belt, and, of course, the excellent Caucasian kindjal dagger or the famous shashka sword as a sidearm.
