Historical Background And Headwear Usage

The historical inspiration for this tall hat, known as a papakh or papakha, comes from the rugged mountainous regions of the Caucasus and Eastern Europe, where it was commonly worn from the 16th to the early 20th century. In history, the papakh served primarily as excellent protection against severe winters and freezing winds, but also as a symbol of masculinity and pride for its wearer. It was traditionally worn by Cossacks, highlanders, and soldiers in the Tsarist army during patrols, combat, and everyday life in harsh climatic conditions. This tall fur hat is made of sheep wool. Sheep wool is highly valued for its excellent insulating properties and moisture-wicking ability, ensuring the head stays dry and warm. The upper part of the hat (the crown) consists of red cloth decorated with a contrasting black cross. This headwear is perfect for winter historical festivals, LARPs set in Eastern-inspired fantasy worlds, or re-enactments of Cossack and Tsarist military units.

Fur Maintenance And Care

Caring for natural sheepskin requires a specific approach. Never wash the hat in a washing machine, do not tumble dry, and do not place it on a direct heat source such as a radiator. If the papakh gets wet, let it air dry freely at room temperature and then gently comb the fur. Completely avoid chemical bleaches and ironing. Recommended Period Accessories

To complement this warming papakh, we highly recommend acquiring a long woollen cloak or a traditional kaftan that will protect you from the piercing cold during winter campaigns. An 18th or 19th-century Cossack costume will be perfectly rounded off by a wide leather belt and an authentic shashka sabre (Caucasian sword), which is inherently associated with this type of headwear.
