Historical Context and Usage of the Cap

This type of headwear, also known as a French hood or Stuart cap, achieved immense popularity throughout the 16th century. It earned its name thanks to Mary, Queen of Scots (Mary Stuart), who fondly wore and popularised it. It adorned the heads of noblewomen and patrician ladies across Western and Central Europe, particularly during the Spanish and English Renaissance. It served not only as a fashion statement but also as a symbol of social standing. Today, you can wear it to historical reenactments, Renaissance balls, theatrical performances, or role-playing games. We recommend that you pair it with an opulent brocade gown featuring a gathered collar from the second half of the 16th century. Please note that the Renaissance dress shown in the photographs is not included in the delivery.

Material, Care, and Safety

The cap is carefully sewn from high-quality brocade, composed of 70% polyester and 30% metallic fibre. The synthetic fibre blend ensures excellent shape retention and crease resistance, while the metallic thread gives the fabric its unmistakable, opulent shimmer. To ensure your cap stays looking like new for as long as possible, it requires gentle handling. Under no circumstances should you machine wash or tumble dry it. We exclusively recommend gentle spot cleaning by hand or using a professional dry-cleaning service. If the fabric must be ironed, always do so only from the reverse side on the lowest temperature setting and through a protective cloth. For safety reasons, we warn you against wearing the cap in the immediate vicinity of an open flame; the material is flammable and could melt irreversibly.
