Historical Origins and Garment Details

The historical inspiration for this spectacular attire dates back to the 19th century, when Cossacks formed the elite light cavalry of the Russian Empire. The core of the costume is the cherkeska, a long, lined coat that features a slit at the back to allow for comfortable horseback riding. The chest of the red coat features firmly attached pockets for gazyrs. Historically, these were tubes containing a precisely measured charge of gunpowder that the rider kept readily accessible. A classic light-coloured rubashka with a stand-up collar is worn underneath the coat. The set is completed with comfortable red trousers adorned with two rows of distinctive buttons on the sides.

The defining element of the entire outfit is the massive white papakha, a traditional headwear piece made of sheep wool. Its distinctive red cloth top is decorated with a black cross. In the past, this hat protected the warrior from freezing temperatures and could often absorb the blow of an enemy sabre. The costume is manufactured from duvetyn, a hundred-percent cotton fabric prized for its high abrasion resistance and strength.

Care Instructions and Safety Warnings

Warrior, to ensure this attire lasts as long as possible in pristine condition, please follow the care instructions. We recommend washing the cotton parts on a gentle cycle at a maximum temperature of 30 °C (86 °F). The fabrics can be ironed inside out on a medium heat setting. Under no circumstances should you machine wash the fur papakha! Simply brush it carefully and let it air out regularly. Please note that the high black riding boots shown in the photographs are not included.
