Two-Colour Velvet Court Jester Costume with Bells and Points

Historical Context and Usage of the Garment

The historical inspiration for this garment dates back to the Late Middle Ages and the early Renaissance, roughly from the 14th to the 16th century, when court jesters (or fools) formed an integral part of European royal and noble courts. These entertainers were among the few who had the privilege of telling the ruler the truth without fear of punishment. Their clothing was intentionally conspicuous and asymmetrical. A typical style is the so-called mi-parti, meaning the vertical division of the garment into two (or more) contrasting colours. The costume is richly decorated with deep points on the hemlines, collar, and hat. It also features the traditional three-pointed jester's hat (originally stylized as donkey ears) and metal bells that announced the fool's arrival and highlighted the dynamics of his movements.

You will perfectly utilise this costume at historical reenactment events, theatrical performances, LARPs, carnivals, or fantasy gatherings. Even though they were entertainers, jesters' clothing was often sewn from expensive fabrics gifted to them by their lords. Therefore, this model is also crafted from high-quality materials to faithfully represent lavish court fashion.

Fabric Composition and Its Benefits

The costume is carefully sewn from premium natural fabrics that guarantee not only an authentic look but also exceptional comfort:

  • Genuine Velvet (100% cotton): Forms the main outer part of the costume. Cotton velvet is durable, breathable, and characterized by a luxurious, deep sheen and softness, thereby faithfully imitating expensive medieval textiles.
  • 100% Cotton: Ensures the overall breathability of the garment and absorbs sweat, which you will greatly appreciate during all-day wear or physically demanding performances.

For historical accuracy, you will not find any pockets on this costume. During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, pockets in clothing were not used; all personal items were carried in pouches and leather bags suspended from a belt.

Care for the Velvet Costume

To ensure your costume remains beautiful for as long as possible and the velvet retains its luxurious appearance, proper care is essential. We strongly recommend dry cleaning the garment at a professional cleaner or washing it very gently by hand in lukewarm water (max. 30 °C / 86 °F). Never wring the costume by twisting; simply press the water out gently through a towel. Dry it laid flat on an even surface, ideally in a well-ventilated area. Never iron the velvet from the right (face) side, as this would irreversibly scorch and flatten the pile! If ironing is necessary, iron the garment only from the reverse (inside) at a lower temperature or use a vertical garment steamer.

Safety Warnings

Although the costume is made of 100% cotton, which is more resistant to heat than synthetic fibres, exercise extreme caution near open flames (campfires, torches). The long and loose points can easily catch fire. From a safety perspective, remember that this is exclusively a festive and leisure garment. Under no circumstances does it serve as a protective layer (padded jack/gambeson) under armour for historical fencing or buhurt.

Please note that any other accessories shown in the photograph (e.g., the inner footwear under the shoe covers) are not included in the delivery.
