Early Medieval Leather Drinking Horn Belt Hanger Forest Man

Usage and Preparation

The hanger is ready for immediate use. You simply thread it onto your belt using the wide loop. Then, slide your drinking horn into it from the top. The leather should firmly grip the horn to prevent it from slipping out on its own. We offer the hanger in a standard size (UNI) that ideally fits horns with a volume of about 0.3 litres (10 fl oz) and a top diameter of around 5 cm (2 inches). If you have a horn with atypical dimensions, we will gladly make a custom-fitted hanger for you – simply select this option when ordering and state the maximum diameter of your horn's rim in the order notes.

Historical Context

For centuries, from the Viking Age to the High Middle Ages, drinking horns were an essential part of festive banquets and daily life. To keep their hands free, warriors, craftsmen, and hunters carried their horns suspended at the waist in leather holders just like this one. The pattern and shape inspiration of this specific model comes from historical finds from the Inner Hebrides in Scotland, dating back to the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries. The embossed motif refers to the insular art of the time, which beautifully blended Celtic and Norse influences.

Care for Your Leather Product

To ensure this leather hanger serves you reliably for many years, the natural cowhide needs proper care. We recommend regularly treating the leather with a high-quality leather balm containing beeswax. This will soften the hide and significantly increase its resistance to moisture. If the hanger gets wet at an event, never dry it near a direct heat source such as an open fire or a radiator. Let it dry naturally at room temperature. The colour shade and surface texture may vary slightly from piece to piece, as it is a handcrafted natural material.

Safety Guidelines

The hanger is designed exclusively for carrying drinking horns. Never try to attach weapons, knives, or other heavy objects to it, as it is not structurally designed for such loads. Exercise extreme caution during sudden movements, running, or contact combat at a LARP – momentum could cause the horn to slip out of the hanger, get damaged, or injure you in an unfortunate fall. For these action-packed moments, we highly recommend leaving the horn safely tucked away in your camp.

Recommended Accessories

We recommend complementing this hanger with a beautiful natural drinking horn from our range and a sturdy period leather belt with a forged buckle.
