This two-piece ensemble is faithfully based on High Gothic fashion, dating roughly to the 13th and 14th centuries. During this era, a woman's wardrobe typically consisted of several layers. The base layer was a shift or chemise, over which the cotte (a long-sleeved under-dress) was worn, followed by the surcote (an over-dress, often sleeveless with deep armholes). While the nobility wore silk and fine broadcloth in brilliant colours, commoners and peasantry dressed in linen, hemp, and coarser woollen fabrics in natural, earthy tones. This costume is ideal for historical reenactment, LARP battles, medieval fairs, or even as authentic attire for serving staff in medieval taverns.
Fabric Composition and Proper Care
The dress is crafted from a combination of durable and breathable fabrics that imitate period materials whilst offering modern comfort. The under-cotte and coif are made from duvetyn (100% cotton), a fabric whose texture and warmth closely resemble fine woollen cloth. The over-surcote is sewn from a linen-cotton blend (70% linen, 30% cotton), providing excellent breathability and that characteristic rustic linen texture. To ensure your dress lasts as long as possible, we recommend machine washing it at a maximum of 30 °C (86 °F) on a gentle cycle. Do not use a tumble dryer; instead, let it air dry naturally on a hanger. You can iron it on a medium setting, ideally whilst the fabric is still slightly damp.
