Historical Context and Usage

This type of garment is loosely based on the fashion of the common folk during the High and Late Middle Ages through to the Early Renaissance (roughly from the 14th to the 16th century). Women from the lower and middle classes, such as peasants, tavern maids, or market vendors, wore a linen or cotton chemise as a base layer (featured here with a practical oval neckline and short elasticated sleeves for easy movement while working). Over this, a bodice was worn to provide support to the body. The laced bodice offered here is additionally reinforced with boning, which ensures excellent shape retention. The long skirt protected the legs from the cold and the dirt of the streets. An integral part of a respectable woman's attire was the coif, which covered the hair and protected it from dust. The costume is ideal for re-enactment with moderate dating requirements, historical festivals, and fantasy events.

Material Properties and Craftsmanship

The main component of the garment is high-quality 100% cotton (used for the chemise and coif) and a breathable blend of 55% linen and 45% cotton, from which the voluminous skirt is sewn. These natural materials excel in their ability to wick away sweat and regulate temperature. The sturdy laced bodice is standardly supplied in duvetyn (brushed firm cotton imitating suede), which is highly resistant to abrasion. The front section is equipped with metal eyelets for a strong cord, allowing the bodice to adapt perfectly to the figure.

Care Instructions and Safety

We recommend washing the natural cotton and linen parts (chemise, skirt, coif) gently in the washing machine at 30 °C (86 °F). However, the boned bodice must be washed exclusively by hand and without strong wringing to avoid breaking the internal supports and deforming its shape. Ironing the linen and cotton parts should be done on a medium to high setting, ideally while the fabric is still slightly damp. Detailed cleaning and maintenance instructions can be found here.

Regarding safety, bear in mind that although natural materials are less prone to immediate melting than synthetics, they are still flammable. Therefore, exercise extreme caution when moving near open campfires. Please note that the footwear and any other accessories shown in the photograph are not included in the delivery.
