Historical Context and Costume Usage

The garment corresponds to the fashion trends of Central and Western Europe around the year 1475. In the second half of the 15th century, button closures experienced a massive boom. Buttons made of wood, bone, or metal not only allowed for tighter and better-fitting garment cuts but were also a symbol of prestige. On this dress, you will find a long button placket on the front and practical button closures on the narrow forearms. An inseparable part of everyday women's clothing at the time was a linen cloth (coif/veil) covering the hair as a sign of modesty, and a hood with a long tail (liripipe) for warmth. You can use this complete set for any historical events from the late Middle Ages. Please remember, however, that this is civilian clothing, not protective armour. Do not engage in contact fencing while wearing it without hidden modern protectors.

Material and Proper Care

To ensure a period-accurate look and your comfort, the garment can be made from warm wool or durable cotton duvetyn. The delivery includes the dress, a fabric belt, a white headcloth, and a hood in the colour of the dress. We highly recommend wearing a long linen or cotton underdress (chemise) underneath, which protected the expensive outer garments from sweat and made maintenance much easier.

• Woollen Variant: We exclusively recommend professional dry cleaning. Washing in water could cause irreversible shrinkage of the fabric.
• Cotton Variant (Duvetyn): Can be washed very gently by hand or in a washing machine on a delicate cycle at a maximum temperature of 30 °C (86 °F). Avoid using bleach and tumble dryers. Iron only on the reverse side on a low to medium heat setting.
• White Headcloth (Cotton/Linen): Can be washed normally at 40 °C (104 °F) and ironed on a medium setting.
• Cleaning and care of costumes

The leather pouch shown in the photographs is not included in the delivery. We warmly recommend purchasing a high-quality medieval leather belt pouch from our selection, which you can easily hang on the provided fabric belt.

Upon request, we can tailor this dress for you in other colours (for example, in rich orange, dark green, brown, or black) according to our fabric swatches. Simply note your desired colour in the comments field of your order (always include the swatch number, the colour letter, and its name, e.g., 03-A-Yellow). If you choose a fabric with a different composition, we will always consult any potential price adjustment with you before processing the order. If you are interested, you can also order a long linen underdress in natural or white colour for an additional fee.

The costume is available in standard sizes, or we will custom-tailor it exactly to your measurements at no extra charge. For custom tailoring, simply fill out our measurement chart carefully after completing your order.
