Simple Late Gothic Women's Dress with Dagged Capelet
Historical Context and Costume Usage
In the second half of the 15th century, the clothing of the common classes was characterized primarily by practicality, though it did not lack elegance influenced by courtly fashion. Outer garments began to fit closer to the body, a trend aided by the massive boom in the use of buttons. On this garment, you will find a functional button placket (with blue buttons) on the front and on the narrowed forearms. A highly fashionable and popular element of the late Gothic period was dagging – cutting the edges of fabrics into scallops or leaf shapes. Here, this element is applied to the capelet and carefully finished with a hand-stitched hem (the brown buttons on the capelet serve only a decorative purpose). An indispensable part of every respectable woman's attire was the headcloth (veil), which covered the hair for practical reasons and out of modesty.
Material and Proper Care
To ensure a period-accurate look and your maximum comfort, we offer the dress in three material variants: from 100% cotton with a velvet-imitating finish (duvetyn), from breathable linen (100% linen), or from warm wool (100% wool) that will safely protect you from the cold. The underdress and headcloth are standardly made from comfortable linen or cotton cloth.
- Woollen Variant (Overdress and Capelet): We exclusively recommend professional dry cleaning. Washing in water could cause irreversible shrinking and felting of the fabric.
- Cotton (Duvetyn) and Linen Variant: Can be washed very gently by hand or in a washing machine on a delicate cycle at a maximum temperature of 30 °C (86 °F). Avoid using aggressive bleaches and tumble dryers. Iron only on the reverse side on a low to medium heat setting.
- Cleaning and care of costumes
The wooden clogs and rope belt shown in the photographs are not included in the delivery. We highly recommend purchasing a long leather belt and a medieval leather pouch from our selection to bring your historical look to absolute perfection.
