Custom-Made Brown Leather Medieval Dagger Scabbard

Historical Context and Evolution of Dagger Scabbards

In the Middle Ages, the dagger was an absolutely essential secondary weapon and a universal tool for daily needs. To prevent the blade from blunting and the warrior from injuring themselves while moving, the weapon was always carried in a scabbard. More luxurious historical originals often consisted of a thin wooden core covered with leather or expensive fabric and lined with fur. The grease in the animal hair lubricated the blade and protected it from rust, while the hairs mechanically held the dagger in place. Over time, and for simpler or lighter weapons, all-leather variants were also widely used. This scabbard represents exactly this simpler, yet highly functional all-leather type. Original belt suspensions in the Middle Ages often used sophisticated knots, thanks to which the warrior could quickly drop the scabbard in the heat of battle. However, for maximum contemporary practicality and safety, this model features a sturdy, riveted belt loop complemented by a leather tying cord.

Custom Production and Important Safety Information

To ensure that the dagger sits absolutely perfectly in the scabbard, does not fall out, and can be drawn smoothly at the same time, this product is manufactured exclusively to measure. When ordering, it is essential to state the exact dimensions of your weapon in the order notes, or ideally to order the scabbard together with a new dagger from our range, to which it will be directly fitted in the workshop. From a safety perspective, bear in mind that the scabbard does not have a hard wooden core or a steel chape (tip fitting). We therefore strongly advise against inserting extremely sharp daggers designed for destructive cutting tests. A sharp point could pierce the leather in the event of an awkward sit or fall, causing you serious injury. The scabbard is thus ideal and absolutely safe primarily for blunt weapons intended for historical stage combat, LARP, or as a transport and aesthetic cover for your decorative dagger.

Natural Leather Care

The product is made of genuine hide, which is a purely natural material. Minor differences in colour and surface texture are its natural characteristics and make each piece an original. For a long lifespan and to maintain its suppleness, regularly treat the leather with a high-quality balsam containing beeswax. If your scabbard gets soaked at a rainy event, let it dry naturally at room temperature. Never dry it placed on a hot radiator or too close to an open fire – the leather would irreversibly shrink, harden, and crack.

To perfectly complete your warrior costume, we highly recommend pairing this scabbard with a robust historical leather belt featuring a hand-forged buckle and a suitable linen or woollen tunic.
