HEMA Federschwert Joachim Meyer – Training Longsword with Engraving, Spring Steel
History and Purpose of the Federschwert
When and why were these swords created? Originals of these "feather swords" (Federschwert) began to appear in the 15th and 16th centuries. They were specialised training weapons used by fencing guilds, such as the renowned Marxbrüder or the Freifechter. The purpose of these swords was to allow practitioners to engage in safer training and tournament bouts without the risk of fatal injuries associated with sharp weapons. A distinct feature is the flared schilt just above the crossguard. This serves to better protect the thumb and helps to safely catch the opponent's blade during "binding" techniques (Winden). Our product is additionally decorated on this schilt with a precise engraving, reflecting the Renaissance appreciation for intricate craftsmanship.
Practical Use and Safety Guidelines
This sword is a fully functional HEMA replica intended for full-contact historical fencing and sparring. The tip of the blade is spatulated (widened and rounded) to increase safety during thrusting attacks. The blade offers a flexibility rating of approximately 10 kg (22 lbs), which helps absorb a portion of the kinetic energy upon impact. Nevertheless, it is absolutely essential to adhere to strict safety rules. Always wear certified protective gear during any contact training. A fencing mask with back-of-head protection, a rigid gorget, a padded fencing jacket (ideally 800N), a groin guard, and heavy, well-padded gloves are mandatory. The weapon is not designed to be swung at hard targets (such as wood or metal posts), as this will cause irreversible damage.
Caring for Your New Sword
To ensure your weapon serves you well for a long time, it requires regular maintenance. After every training session, wipe the blade and crossguard with a dry cloth to remove sweat and moisture. Afterwards, apply a thin layer of gun oil (such as Ballistol) to the metal parts. If burrs or nicks appear on the edges of the blade after hard clashes, promptly and gently file them smooth. This prevents dangerous injuries to your training partner and damage to their equipment. Never store the sword permanently in a damp environment or trapped in a sealed bag without airflow.
