Knightly Arming Sword Godfrey of Pattern-Welded Steel, Type XIV

Sword Design and Construction

The core of this masterpiece is its impressively wide blade, measuring a full 6.8 cm (2.68 inches) at the crossguard. It is hand-forged from pattern-welded steel, which creates a unique and unrepeatable layered texture on its surface. The blade has undergone a careful hardening and tempering process in proven workshops, achieving an optimal hardness range of 50–55 HRC. A prominent, wide fuller runs down the center of the blade, significantly reducing the weapon's weight and providing the necessary flexibility and dynamic handling without sacrificing structural integrity.

The hilt is designed for maximum reliability and durability. Both the massive wheel pommel with its raised central boss and the elegantly curved crossguard are crafted from high-quality stainless steel, making their maintenance incredibly easy. The grip consists of a solid wooden core wrapped in brown synthetic leather (PU leather). The handle's surface is further reinforced with distinct risers (ribs), ensuring an exceptionally firm and secure grip, even when wearing a leather gauntlet. The set includes a beautiful wooden scabbard covered in the same brown material, fitted with a stainless steel chape, and equipped with a sophisticated system of leather straps and buckles for carrying over the shoulder or on a belt.

Historical Context and Usage

Based on its parameters and shape, this weapon dates back to the 13th and early 14th centuries and corresponds to Type XIV in the renowned Oakeshott sword typology. These swords were characterized by a very broad blade base that smoothly tapered to an acute point. They were designed as primary sidearms for knights fighting in a shield wall or from horseback. The broad blade allowed for crushing cuts capable of cleaving through padded gambesons and mail armor, while the tapered tip could exploit vulnerabilities in early plate defenses. The weapon was traditionally used in combination with a kite shield, a buckler, or a heater shield.

Care and Maintenance

Pattern-welded carbon steel is susceptible to surface corrosion and therefore requires your regular attention. After every training session, or even after just touching it with a bare hand, the blade must be carefully wiped with a dry cloth and treated with a thin layer of gun oil or microcrystalline wax. The stainless steel hilt fittings only need a quick polish. Never store the weapon inside the scabbard for extended periods, as the wood and synthetic leather can trap moisture and cause the blade to rust. For long-term storage, choose a dry environment and display the sword outside its scabbard.

Safety Warnings for Sharp Swords

Important Warning: This knightly sword is a fully functional replica and comes with a live, sharp edge! The weapon is intended primarily for individual test cutting practice (tameshigiri) on appropriate targets, such as soaked tatami mats or plastic water bottles. Under no circumstances is it designed for Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) sparring, stage combat, LARP combat, or any other form of steel-on-steel contact fighting. Contact with hard materials will inevitably damage the edge and carries the risk of dangerous steel splintering and severe injury. The use of this weapon is entirely at your own risk. Neither the manufacturer nor the seller assumes any liability for injury, death, or property damage caused by improper or unsafe handling.

Recommended Accessories

For an authentic look and practical use, we highly recommend acquiring a medieval buckler, a shield historically inseparable from one-handed arming swords of this type. A high-quality universal gun oil, such as Ballistol, along with a microfiber cleaning cloth, will serve you perfectly for the regular maintenance of the damascus steel. If you plan to wear the weapon with a historical costume, complete your outfit with a sturdy medieval leather belt featuring a period-accurate brass buckle.
