Late Medieval Articulated Poleyns (15th C.) – 16 Gauge Steel
Design and Construction
Crafted from 1.6 mm (16 gauge) mild steel, these poleyns are built to withstand the rigors of combat simulation. The interior is blackened to provide improved resistance against rust. The armor features a segmented (articulated) design consisting of:
- The main knee cop (buckler) with a deep cup for the patella.
- Distinctive "fishtail" shaped side wings. These fan-plates are crucial for protecting the tendons and the back of the knee from wrap-around shots.
- An upper lame (demi-cuisse) extending towards the thigh.
- A lower lame (demi-greave) extending towards the shin.
- Rolled edges (flanges) at the top and bottom to prevent chafing and increase structural strength.
How to Wear
Secure armor is safe armor. These poleyns utilize a dual-attachment system: 1. Straps: Three adjustable straps made of heavy-duty black leather (approx. 3 mm thick) with steel buckles ensure a tight fit around the back of your leg. 2. Arming Points: At the top edge, you will find cotton cords with brass aiglets (tips). These are designed to be tied (pointed) to your arming doublet or padded hose. This suspension method is historically correct and essential to prevent the armor from sliding down during movement.

Historical Context
In the 15th century, as armor transitioned to full plate coverage, the knees were a primary target. Armorers developed articulated joints using sliding rivets to allow knights to ride horses and move on foot without restriction. The prominent side wings seen on this model are a hallmark of the period, designed to deflect enemy weapon points away from the leg.
Maintenance and Safety
* **Care Instructions:** This item is made of mild steel and is not rust-proof. Always wipe dry after use and apply a protective oil (such as **Ballistol** or WD-40) regularly. * **Usage:** While 16 gauge steel is substantial, these poleyns are primarily intended for **Re-enactment, LARP, and Costuming**. They are not rated for full-contact heavy combat (like Buhurt) where hardened steel is often required. * **Sizing Note:** Please remember to take your measurements while wearing your **padded hose or gambeson**, as the armor is designed to fit over padding, not bare skin.
