The Seneschal Sword | Oakeshott Type XIV Replica

The name "Seneschal" refers to a senior royal officer and steward, a key figure in the medieval hierarchy. The weapon's representative appearance reflects this status – the combination of the deep red grip and scabbard with the golden brass pommel evokes a weapon fit for a nobleman.

Construction and Typology

Typologically, this is a classic Type XIV sword according to Oakeshott. The blade is wide at the guard, which is ideal for binding and displacing an opponent's blade, and tapers significantly to a strong point designed for thrusting. This profile, along with a lenticular cross-section and a fuller terminating at two-thirds of the length, makes the blade stiff and well-suited for both cutting and thrusting.

An interesting feature is the hilt construction. While most Type XIV swords have curved crossguards, this model features a straight guard (Style 2). A unique element is the brass pommel shaped like a faceted sphere, reminiscent of Type R pommels or later weapons recovered from the Mary Rose shipwreck. On top of the pommel, you will find a steel peen block. This practical detail not only provides additional length to the tang but also facilitates disassembly, maintenance, or future modifications to the sword.

Usage and Specifications

The sword is crafted from 1075 High Carbon Steel. Thanks to its dimensions and balance, it is ideal for use with a buckler, making it a versatile sidearm for both soldiers and civilians. Included is a wooden scabbard covered in red leather, adorned with a brass chape featuring a cutout design that mirrors the pommel.

Sword Care

This is a high carbon steel replica that requires regular maintenance to prevent corrosion.

  • After every touch, wipe the blade with a dry cloth and oil it (gun oil or WD-40 is suitable).
  • Do not store the sword in the leather scabbard for long periods, as leather absorbs moisture and can cause the blade to rust.
  • Brass parts can be polished with a metal polish to maintain their shine.
