Monk Habit Cadfael | Cotton | Brown
Complete Outfit for God's Servants
This set consists of three main parts that together form the unmistakable silhouette of a medieval religious brother:
- Tunic: A long, loose garment with long sleeves that reaches down to the ankles. It is designed to be airy and unrestrictive.
- Cowl with Hood (Scapular): A separate upper piece that covers the shoulders and chest, seamlessly transitioning into a spacious hood. This gives you a mysterious appearance and protects you from inclement weather or prying eyes.
- Rope Belt (Cingulum): A natural-coloured cotton rope used to cinch the tunic at the waist and adjust its length.
The entire costume is made of sturdy 100% cotton. This is not thin linen, but a robust fabric that withstands demanding use at events while remaining breathable and pleasant to the touch.
Historical Insight: The Colour of Poverty
Although the name Cadfael refers to the Benedictines (who wore black), the brown colour of this habit is typical for the Franciscans or Greyfriars. This mendicant order, founded by St. Francis of Assisi, chose brown as a symbol of connection to the earth and poverty. Monastic clothing in the Middle Ages was designed purely for function—it had to keep the wearer warm, last a long time, and not distract from prayer. The rope around the waist, called a cingulum, often had three knots symbolizing the three monastic vows: poverty, chastity, and obedience.

Safety Warnings and Tips
Due to the length of the tunic, be careful when walking up stairs or in difficult terrain to avoid stepping on the hem and tripping. If the tunic is too long for you, you can simply hitch it up higher using the belt. Please note that the accessories shown in the photos (cross, book, goblet, shoes) are not included.
