Historical Context and Symbolism

The Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans) was founded by Saint Francis of Assisi in 1209. Unlike older monastic orders, the Franciscans did not enclose themselves in monasteries but worked directly among the people in the cities, preaching and helping the poor. The legacy of Saint Francis includes absolute poverty and renunciation. The original habits of these mendicant friars were made of undyed grey wool, but the characteristic brown colour became standard later on. A traditional element of the attire is the white rope, known as a cingulum, used to tie the habit at the waist. For Franciscans, this rope is tied with three knots, which symbolize the three fundamental religious vows: poverty, obedience, and chastity.

This garment is the perfect choice for historical reenactment, cosplay, or LARP. However, please remember that this is standard textile clothing, not protective armour. If your role puts you in the middle of a battle skirmish, ensure your safety and consider wearing hidden modern protectors underneath the habit.

Material and Proper Care

The habit and cowl are tailored from 100% wool, an authentic period material with excellent temperature-regulating properties. Wool will keep you warm in cold weather and can withstand light drizzle. However, to ensure the garment lasts a long time and retains its shape, it requires specific care.

• Washing: Given the 100% wool construction, professional dry cleaning is strictly recommended. Regular machine washing would cause irreversible shrinking and felting of the material.
• Drying: Never dry the garment in a tumble dryer or on a direct heat source (e.g., a radiator).
• Ironing: Wool should only be ironed on the lowest setting, ideally through a damp pressing cloth.
