Medieval Monk Habit Remigius With Pointed Hood

Universal Spiritual Garment Of The European Middle Ages

The monk's habit or cowl represents a fundamental spiritual garment whose roots reach deep into the Early Middle Ages. Traditionally, it was worn by members of various monastic orders (such as the Franciscans, Benedictines, or Dominicans) throughout Christian Europe. It served as a clear visual symbol of modesty, poverty, and devotion to faith. The garment reaches down to the ground, features voluminous sleeves, and a distinctive pointed hood that provided protection from the cold and harsh weather. At the waist, the habit is practically tied with a coarse rope. You have a choice of three carefully selected materials: duvetyne (100% cotton) provides excellent absorbency and breathability, a linen blend (55% linen, 45% cotton) is ideal for hot summer days, and the wool variant (60% wool, 40% polyester) will reliably keep you warm in chilly monastery corridors. The addition of polyester in the wool variant is chosen deliberately so that the fabric does not look unesthetically like a rough blanket and holds its shape better.

This Monk Habit Remigius will be custom-made for you in other colours upon request, according to these fabric swatches. Please note the desired colour or colours in your order in the comment field. Always state (1) the swatch number, (2) the colour letter, and (3) the colour name (e.g., 03-A-yellow). If a fabric with a different composition is chosen, the price may change. Any potential price change will be thoroughly consulted with you before processing the order.

The garment is available in standard sizes according to this size chart. However, it will be tailored exactly to your measurements at completely no extra charge. In that case, after completing the order, carefully fill out this measurement chart.

Care For Historical Clothing And Safety Instructions

To ensure this garment lasts as long as possible in perfect condition, we recommend following the correct maintenance procedures depending on the chosen material. The cotton and linen variants can be washed gently by hand or on a delicate machine cycle at up to 30 °C (86 °F). We recommend entrusting the wool variant exclusively to a professional dry cleaner, or washing it very carefully by hand in lukewarm water with a wool detergent. Do not dry the habit in a tumble dryer, as this could cause the natural fibres to shrink. You can read more detailed information here: Cleaning and maintenance instructions. Please exercise heightened caution near open flames (campfires, fireplaces, torches), as natural fabrics are inherently flammable and the loose cut increases the risk of ignition.

Recommended Accessories

To achieve an absolutely flawless look of a medieval monk, we highly recommend complementing this habit with authentic period leather footwear (such as simple leather sandals), a large wooden cross for the neck, and a traditional rosary. If you are planning to go on a journey, a simple leather shoulder bag will also serve you perfectly. Please note that the footwear or other accessories shown in the photographs are not included in the delivery of this product.
