Art Gladius Serrated Bread Knife | 8-Inch 440 Steel Blade | Sandalwood Handle | Made in Spain
Appearance and Construction
This knife is unmistakable thanks to its long blade, measuring approximately 205 mm (around 8 inches), featuring a pronounced serrated edge. The points of the serrations are sharp and designed to easily bite into hard crusts. The blade is crafted from 440 stainless steel. Similar to other knives in this design range, the manufacturer specifies a mirror polish finish, but visually the blade features an attractive hammered texture on its upper part. The "GLADIUS" logo is located near the handle. The blade has a solid thickness of approx. 2.6 mm, giving it good rigidity. The reddish sandalwood handle has an ergonomic, curved shape for a comfortable hold and is finished with a metal bolster with decorative accent rings. The total length of the knife is approx. 335 mm and it weighs around 198 g.
Sharp Serrations and Strong 440 Steel
A serrated edge needs a solid foundation. The 440 steel, hardened to 58−60 HRC, provides the blade with:
- Aggressive Cut: The sharp teeth easily bite into crusts and saw cleanly without requiring much pressure.
- Long-Lasting Sharpness of Serrations: The quality steel ensures the points of the serrations stay sharp for longer.
- Blade Rigidity: The 2.6 mm thickness gives the blade the necessary stiffness so it doesn't bend during slicing.
- Corrosion Resistance: 440 steel is resistant to rust and common kitchen acids.
The Sandalwood Handle – Style and Comfort
The elegant sandalwood handle offers:
- Comfortable Grip: The ergonomic shape ensures a comfortable and secure hold while slicing.
- Beautiful Appearance: The reddish colour and fine grain of the wood are pleasing to the eye.
- Durability: Sandalwood is hard and durable.
- Natural Material: Lends the knife a warm and pleasant character.
What is This Knife For?
As the name suggests, it's an expert at:
- Slicing all types of bread and pastries (with both hard and soft crusts).
- Portioning cakes, pies, and other baked goods.
- Slicing fruit and vegetables with tough skins and soft interiors (e.g., tomatoes, pineapples, melons).
Caring for Your Knife – Special Attention for Serrations
A serrated knife requires slightly different care than plain-edged knives:
- Hand Wash Only: Dishwashers are taboo! They would damage the steel and the wooden handle. Wash by hand with warm water and mild washing-up liquid, then dry immediately.
- Safe Storage: Not loose in a drawer. A long knife belongs in a knife block or on a magnetic rack (long enough).
- Sharpening Serrations: Attention! Conventional sharpening stones and honing steels are unsuitable for serrated edges. Serrations generally stay sharp longer than plain edges. If you eventually feel the need for sharpening, it's best to entrust the knife to a professional. For home maintenance, special tapered ceramic sharpening rods exist, which can be carefully used to hone the individual gullets (the curved recesses) between the teeth.
Safety First
Sharp serrations demand respect:
- Use a stable cutting board.
- Slice carefully with smooth sawing motions, cutting away from your body.
- Keep the hand holding the bread at a safe distance. Serrations can be more aggressive than a plain edge.
- Never try to catch a falling knife.
- Store the knife safely.
With the Art Gladius bread knife with sandalwood handle, slicing bread becomes a pleasure. Forget deformed slices and enjoy perfect cuts thanks to a quality tool from Spain that is not only functional but also beautiful to look at.
