Embroidered Viking Tunic with Knotwork – Blue

Design and Craftsmanship

This tunic is based on the classic "T-tunic" cut, which was standard in the Early Middle Ages. The main aesthetic feature is the intricate embroidery around the keyhole neckline. The knotwork motif references Viking art styles (such as Borre or Jellinge) and adds status and elegance to the garment. The deep navy blue colour combined with the golden thread creates a beautiful contrast that looks great both in photos and in person.

The tunic is made from lightweight cotton. Although wool or linen would be the most historically accurate materials, cotton offers a great alternative for those seeking a fabric that is soft against the skin, easy to care for, and affordable. It is the perfect choice for hot summer days when a woollen tunic would be too warm.

Usage in History and Today

From the 9th to the 11th century, the tunic was the cornerstone of the male wardrobe across Europe, including Scandinavia. It was worn belted, with a knife, pouch, and other necessities hanging from the waist. Decorations around the neck and hems often served not only as ornamentation but also had an apotropaic (protective) function against evil spirits.

This replica is particularly suitable for:

  • LARP and Cosplay: A great base for a Norse warrior, trader, or Jarl costume.
  • Historical Fairs and Festivals: Thanks to the cotton, you won't overheat even in direct sunlight.
  • Stage Combat: The loose fit allows for a full range of arm movement.

Care Instructions

To keep the embroidery and colour looking like new for as long as possible, we recommend the following care:

  • Wash ideally by hand or on a gentle machine cycle in cold water.
  • Use mild detergents; avoid bleach or harsh chemicals.
  • Do not tumble dry. Let the tunic line dry in the shade (direct sunlight could fade the colour).
  • Iron on low heat and always inside out to protect the embroidery.

Size Chart

The measurements below correspond to the tunic's cut. As this is a loose-fitting garment, the tunic's circumference should always be slightly larger than your chest measurement. Note: The sleeve length in the table corresponds to the short-sleeved version.

Size Your Chest (in) Sleeve Length (Short) Total Length (in)
S 36 – 38 10 in 34.5
M 38 – 40 10 in 34.5
L 40 – 43.5 11 in 35
XL 43.5 – 47 11.5 in 36
XXL 47 – 51 12 in 37
XXXL 51 – 56.5 12 in 43

Recommended Accessories: A leather belt with a historical buckle and simple canvas trousers go perfectly with this tunic.
