Who Wore Tunics In History?

For centuries, the tunic was the basic garment in many European cultures. It was worn by men and women of all social classes, from Vikings and Celts to Romans and the inhabitants of early medieval Europe. While long sleeves were common, especially in cooler climates or for more formal occasions, tunics with short sleeves or sleeveless versions were also frequently used. They offered more comfort in warm weather, facilitated physical labor, and often served as an undergarment. Embellishments, like the embroidery on this tunic, then distinguished garments for special occasions or indicated the wearer's status.

An Interesting Fact About Tunics

Did you know that Viking women, renowned for their independence and strength, wore clothing that was not only practical but often beautifully adorned? Their typical attire consisted of several layers, where an undertunic might be simpler, while outer garments, including tunics or apron dresses (hangerok), were often decorated with complex embroidery, colorful ribbons, and metal appliqués. These embellishments not only enhanced the aesthetic value of the clothing but could also reflect the wearer's wealth, social status, or their affiliation with a particular clan or regional tradition.

Care Instructions For Your Tunic

To keep your medieval cotton tunic beautiful for a long time and to preserve its colours and shape:

  • Washing: We recommend hand washing or machine washing on a gentle cycle at a maximum of 30°C (86°F). Use mild detergent for coloured fabrics. Wash separately for the first few washes to prevent any potential colour bleeding.
  • Spinning: Avoid a strong spin cycle due to the embroidery.
  • Bleaching: Never use chemical bleach on the tunic.
  • Drying: Dry flat or hanging on a hanger, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Do not tumble dry.
  • Ironing: Iron on the reverse side at a medium temperature (cotton setting). Iron the embroidered area with particular care, ideally under a thin cotton cloth, to avoid damage.
