Mail chausses were the dominant form of leg protection throughout most of the High Middle Ages. They were worn by Norman knights at the Battle of Hastings and Crusaders in the Holy Land alike. Before the advent of plate armour, they were the only effective defence against cutting blows aimed at the thighs and shins. How to Wear and Adjust
