Wear History Without the Unnecessary Weight
This type of armour, known as voiders or a "sleeved waistcoat of mail," was a clever solution in the 14th and 15th centuries. Knights and men-at-arms wore them under plate armour—such as a cuirass or brigandine—to protect the armpits, shoulders, and arms, areas often left exposed by the plates. This saved both weight and the cost of material without sacrificing protection for key parts of the body.
How to use it today?
- Under a cuirass or brigandine: Create a fully functional and historically accurate harness for reenactment or HMB (Historical Medieval Battle).
- Over a gambeson: Ideal for lighter characters in LARP, such as archers, rogues, or scouts, who need protection but also maximum agility.
- For film and theatre: Its low weight and realistic appearance make it perfect for actors and extras who need to wear it all day on set.
Aluminium and Riveting: Modern Benefits for a Historical Look
The Lightness and Durability of Aluminium
Aluminium is roughly three times lighter than steel. This means less fatigue and more energy for both fighting and fun. Additionally, it is naturally resistant to corrosion, so you don't have to worry about rust as you would with steel armour.
The Strength of Riveted Rings
Unlike cheaper "butted" mail, every single ring in this armour is riveted shut. This dramatically increases the strength of the mail. The rivets prevent the rings from being pulled open upon impact, giving you the confidence that your armour will reliably protect you.
An Armourer's Apprentice's Tidbit
Did you know that the name "voiders" comes from the word "voids"? These mail sections were designed precisely to fill the gaps and "voids" in plate armour where the wearer was vulnerable.
Maintenance for a Long Life and Clean Garments
Although aluminium does not rust, it can oxidize over time, leaving a grey powder on your undergarments (gambeson). To prevent this and keep your armour in top condition, follow these steps:
- Cleaning: Occasionally wash the mail with lukewarm soapy water and gently scrub it with a soft brush.
- Drying: Always dry it thoroughly, ideally in the sun or near a heat source. Never leave it wet.
- Conservation: Once dry, give it a light coat of silicone spray and wipe off the excess with a cloth. The oil will create a protective barrier that prevents the black rub-off from soiling your gambeson.
