Battle-Ready Riveted Chainmail Shirt (Voiders), 9mm Round Rings
Detailed Product Description
This armour has the effective cut of a short shirt, covering the shoulders, upper chest, and back, and is fitted with short sleeves. Its design is intentionally minimalist to avoid interfering with plate components and to minimize weight. The foundation is a traditional 4-in-1 mail weave of round steel rings with a 9 mm inner diameter and a wire thickness of approx. 1.2 mm (18 gauge). The key feature, visible in the detailed photograph, is that each ring is securely closed with a dome rivet. This ensures the weave will not fail under impact.
Who Is This Armour For?
Thanks to its solid riveted construction, this half-shirt is designed for:
- HMB, Buhurt, and Battle of the Nations fighters seeking reliable protection for the gaps in their plate harness.
- Participants in full-contact historical battles who demand uncompromising strength and safety.
- Builders of functional 15th-century harnesses who value historical accuracy and maximum durability.
- Hardcore LARPers whose events involve more intense, heavy combat.
The Riveted Advantage
A riveted construction is the defining characteristic of true combat-grade mail. Unlike butted rings, which can be forced open by a strong strike or thrust, a rivet turns each link into a solid, closed loop. A weave constructed this way provides exponentially greater protection and is the only historically correct and safe choice for full-contact combat.

A Window into History: Armour Optimized for Combat
In the 15th century, the age of perfected plate armour, warriors faced a dilemma: how to protect the gaps in the plate (armpits, elbow crooks) without wearing a heavy and bulky mail hauberk underneath the cuirass. The solution was the so-called voiders—mail gussets and sleeves sewn directly into the arming jack. This riveted half-shirt is a modern interpretation of that principle: it provides maximum protection where needed, while saving weight where the plates already offer cover.
A Fun Fact from History
Riveting mail was an extremely laborious and time-consuming process. It is estimated that the creation of a single, high-quality riveted hauberk could take several hundred hours of work. This incredible effort (and therefore cost) was one of the reasons why mail armour was such a prized possession.
How to Care for Your Armour
Even the most durable armour deserves care. To ensure it serves you in many battles:
- Keep it Dry: After an event, always let it dry thoroughly and wipe off any moisture and dirt.
- Oil it Regularly: Give it a light coat of a preservative oil (like WD-40 or Ballistol) and wipe off the excess with a cloth. This will protect it from rust.
- Store it Properly: Keep it in a dry place, ideally hanging to distribute the weight, or rolled in an oiled cloth.
