Chainmail Chausses | Flat Ring Round Riveted/Solid 6 mm

Detailed Description and Construction

These chausses are crafted from mild steel with a natural finish, giving them an authentic, rugged appearance. The "4-in-1" weave pattern uses 18 gauge rings. The key feature of this model is the specific alternating ring combination:

  • Riveted Rings: Secured with round rivets to prevent rings from bursting open under stress.
  • Solid Rings: Continuous, unbroken rings without a slit or join, which significantly increase the structural integrity of the mesh.

Designed as "One Size Fits All," these chausses feature a fully adjustable leather belt system with buckles. This allows you to suspend the armor comfortably from your waist without needing to purchase a separate arming girdle or lendenier. The lower section extends into a foot guard (saboton style) that covers the top of your footwear.

Historical Context

In the early medieval period, legs were often the most vulnerable part of a warrior, protected only by cloth or leather. Chainmail chausses begin to appear frequently in imagery from the 11th century, such as on the Bayeux Tapestry (1066), worn by figures like William the Conqueror. At that time, they were a luxury item. By the 12th and 13th centuries, however, they became standard equipment for knights. They complemented the long hauberk, protecting the legs against infantry strikes, which was crucial when fighting on horseback.

Care and Maintenance

Since this product is made from mild steel, it is prone to rust if not properly cared for. To keep your armor in top condition:

  • Storage: Never store the chausses while they are wet. Keep them in a dry place, ideally lightly oiled.
  • Cleaning: Wipe the mail dry after every use. Surface rust can be removed with a coarse cloth or a soft wire brush, followed by an application of a protective oil (e.g., WD-40, Ballistol, or mineral oil).
  • Usage: Be careful not to drag the foot guard section over rough concrete or stones to avoid damaging the rings.

Warning: This is a historical armor replica. While the riveted/solid construction offers significant durability, it is not rated for full-contact competitive armored combat (Buhurt/HMB) where full-force steel weapons are used. However, it is perfectly suitable and offers good protection for standard re-enactment, stage combat, and LARP.
