Two-Handed Viking Double-Bitted Battle Axe

A Weapon Forged for Battle

Every detail of this axe has been designed with function and durability in mind.

The Axe Head

The massive, symmetrical double-bitted head is forged from tough, high-carbon steel. A dark, rustic forged finish gives it an authentic, battle-worn appearance. With an overall width of 34 cm (13.3 in) and two 16 cm (6.3 in) cutting edges, it is ready for any challenge.

The Haft and Grip

The long, 76 cm (30 in) two-handed haft is made from ash wood, which is renowned for its strength and resilience – the traditional choice for axe hafts for centuries. For a secure and firm grip, the haft is largely wrapped with a criss-cross leather cord, and the lower handle section is fully encased in leather.

The Leather Sheaths

Included with your purchase are two custom-fitted sheaths made of genuine leather, which protect both blades (and, of course, you and your surroundings). The sheaths are easily secured using a traditional and stylish horn or bone toggle closure system.

Who Is This Axe For?

As this is a functional and sharp weapon, it must be handled with respect. It is ideal as a:

  • Collector's and Display Piece: Hung on a wall or placed on a stand, it will become the focal point of any room.
  • Premium Costume Accessory: Indispensable for a Viking, barbarian, fantasy dwarf, or orc warrior costume at LARP events, cosplay conventions, or historical festivals.
  • Cutting Practice: Thanks to its robust construction, it is suitable for cutting practice on appropriate targets such as wood logs.

A Glimpse into History: The Myth and Reality of the Double-Bitted Axe

Although the double-bitted axe is inextricably linked with Vikings in popular culture, it was exceedingly rare, if not non-existent, as a weapon in the actual history of medieval Europe. The Vikings were famous for their single-bitted axes, particularly the long Danish axes. The most famous historical double-axe, the Labrys, originates from the Minoan civilization in Crete, where it likely served as a ceremonial and religious symbol rather than a primary tool of war. This model is therefore best understood as a fantasy weapon, inspired by legends and the modern image of the fearless barbarian warrior.

Interesting Fact: The Problem with Two Blades

So why didn't double-bitted axes see widespread use in battle? There are several reasons. Two blades make the axe significantly top-heavy, which impairs its balance and makes it more difficult to wield with speed in combat. Furthermore, the second blade offers no significant tactical advantage—in a fight, you need one good edge. Its real strength, therefore, lies in its imposing and intimidating appearance, which is why it is so popular in the world of fantasy.

Safety First: Essential Handling Guidelines

Remember, you are holding a sharp and dangerous weapon. Safety must always be your top priority.

  • Always treat this axe as if it were loaded—in this case, sharpened. It is not a toy.
  • Ensure you have ample free space around you when handling it.
  • Always keep the protective leather sheaths on the blades when the axe is not in use. This applies to transport, carrying it as part of a costume, and for display.
  • Keep the weapon in good condition. A sharp and well-maintained axe is, paradoxically, safer than a dull and neglected one.
  • Keep it out of the reach of children.

Caring for Your Weapon

Proper care will ensure that your axe serves you for many years to come.

  • Steel Head: Keep the blades clean and dry. After use or even just handling, wipe them down and apply a light coat of oil (e.g., Ballistol, WD-40) to protect against rust.
  • Wooden Haft: Protect the wood from prolonged moisture. To maintain its resilience, you can occasionally treat it with linseed oil.
  • Leather Parts: Keep the leather dry and treat it with a leather conditioner or grease to maintain its suppleness.
