Brass Nautical Keychain with Mechanical 40-Year Perpetual Calendar

How to Properly Use the Perpetual Calendar

The principle of this pocket calendar is ingeniously simple and logically derived from historical mechanical calculating devices. Using the rotating brass disc, simply align the chosen year, which you will find in the upper section, with the desired month. In the lower part, the columns of dates will then neatly line up under the individual days of the week. This clever mechanism also accounts for leap years – the months marked in red (January and February) are meant for these, ensuring the calculation of days remains absolutely accurate without shifting. The keychain is equipped with a practical screw-lock carabiner, allowing you to easily and securely attach it to a trouser loop, a leather belt, or directly to your main keyring.

The Historical Legacy of Pocket Calendars

Although this specific model has a range intended for modern years, the concept of the so-called perpetual calendar reaches deep into the past. Similar pocket devices made of brass and bronze were carried by scholars, wealthy merchants, and sea captains as early as the Renaissance period, with these tools becoming particularly widespread during the Victorian era. The anchor and sailing ship stamped on the front refer to the golden age of sail, when such small astronomical and calendrical instruments formed the essential equipment of every proper navigator and explorer.

Brass Care and Safe Handling Guidelines

Since the product is made of brass, it will naturally oxidise over time due to air humidity and the sweat from your hands. It will thus acquire a beautiful, authentic matte patina. However, if you prefer the original golden shine, we recommend occasionally polishing the surface gently with a soft cloth and a specialized polishing paste for metals and brass. The central mechanism of the disc is riveted – never attempt to dismantle it by force. Also, do not expose the keychain to strong impacts or drops on hard surfaces, so that the thin rotating disc does not bend and the mechanism does not become permanently jammed. Washing the keychain in a washing machine together with clothing is completely inappropriate and could damage both the calendar itself and the washing machine drum.
