Blackened Steel Chainmail Aventail, 9 mm Flat Rings, Alternating Riveted and Solid

How to Use Your Aventail

This aventail is designed for easy attachment to the rim of your helmet. The top edge, made of genuine cowhide leather, is prepared for sewing or riveting to the helmet's padded liner, or for lacing onto vervelles (small mounting staples on a helmet) with a leather cord. Once attached, the aventail elegantly and functionally drapes over your neck, nape, and shoulders, significantly enhancing your protection in combat without restricting your movement or field of vision.

A Step Back into History

The aventail (or camail) was a key component of armour in the 14th and early 15th centuries. It represented an evolutionary step from the great helm, which was worn over a separate mail coif. Knights favored bascinets with attached aventails because the combination offered superior protection while allowing for much greater head mobility and peripheral vision—a critical advantage on the battlefield. It effectively protected the gap between the helmet and the cuirass or brigandine.

Why Choose This Specific Aventail?

The Strength of Alternating Riveted and Solid Rings

The construction, which alternates between rows of flat rings with round rivets and rows of solid, punched rings, is historically accurate and extremely resilient. The riveted links prevent the rings from being pulled apart by a strong slash from a blade, while the solid rings add further strength and rigidity to the mail. This is one of the most reliable methods of constructing chainmail armour.

Blackened Steel: Form and Function

The blackened (or burnished) finish not only gives the aventail an authentic, slightly menacing look but also provides a basic layer of protection against corrosion. Furthermore, it doesn't glint in the sun, which was a tactical advantage on the battlefield. This ensures your armour will look great while being more resistant to the elements.

A Tidbit from History

Did you know that the method of attaching an aventail could reveal a great deal about a knight's wealth and status? While common soldiers might have had their aventails simply sewn to a leather strip, wealthier nobles often used decorative brass vervelles and an intricately woven cord, turning their helmet into a work of art.

Caring for Your New Armour

To ensure your aventail serves you for a long time and doesn't stain your gambeson, proper care is essential. After each use, especially in damp conditions, dry it thoroughly. Then, lightly spray it with a preservation oil (like WD-40 or Ballistol) and use a cloth to spread a thin film over the entire surface. Wipe off any excess oil to prevent it from getting on your clothing. Store it in a dry, well-ventilated place.
