Late Gothic Knightly Sword Westminster, 15th Century

Historical Background and Purpose

This type of sword represents the sidearm of a medium-to-high status noble or knight at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. During that era, swords were worn both with full plate armour and in civilian dress. Typologically, it corresponds to the Oakeshott XVIII classification, a typical cut-and-thrust blade capable of dealing with mail armour and finding gaps in plate. Historians point out a striking similarity to the Westminster Abbey sword, long associated with King Henry V, though now attributed more to the funeral achievements of Henry VII. It is quite possible that you are holding a replica of a weapon that once adorned the tomb of a significant English lord.

Appearance and Craftsmanship

At first glance, the sword will captivate you with its slender blade, tapering to a sharp point, and its distinctive crossguard. The blade is forged from high-quality 1075 High Carbon Steel. Although the blade features the geometry of a sharp weapon (bevelled edges), it is supplied with a blunt edge approximately 1 mm (0.04") thick. The grip is short, designed for a single hand, and terminates in a massive wheel pommel with a raised centre, which helps balance the weapon superbly.

The luxurious scabbard is impossible to miss. It features a wooden core covered in rich red leather, which forms a decorative detail at the throat near the guard. The tip of the scabbard is protected by a brass chape with precise cut-outs and an acorn or ball-shaped finial. This combination of red leather and golden brass gives the sword a truly regal appearance.

Usage and Safety

It is important to realize that although the sword is made of quality steel and structurally corresponds to a real weapon, it is not intended for full-contact stage combat (re-enactment battles or buhurt) where heavy steel-on-steel impact occurs. The fine edge (1 mm) would quickly become nicked under such rough handling.

  • Suitable for: Solo drills, costume accessory, ceremonial purposes, collecting. Once professionally sharpened, it is suitable for cutting tests on soft targets.
  • Not suitable for: Contact fencing, hacking at hard objects (wood, stone, metal).

Care Instructions

To ensure this beauty lasts for generations, it requires care. The blade is made of carbon steel, meaning it is susceptible to rust. After every touch with bare hands or use, wipe the blade with a dry cloth and apply a thin layer of preservative oil (e.g., gun oil, WD-40, or 3-in-1 oil). The leather parts of the scabbard and grip should occasionally be treated with leather conditioner to prevent cracking. Do not store the sword in the scabbard for long periods, as leather can trap moisture and cause the blade to rust.

To complete the perfect look, we suggest pairing this sword with a period-appropriate belt featuring a brass buckle that matches the scabbard's chape.
