Medieval Linen Coif – Essential 13th–15th Century Headwear
More Than Just a Piece of Cloth
At first glance, it looks like a simple cap, but in practice, it is an indispensable tool. Thanks to its three-panel construction, the coif contours well to the shape of the head without bunching up. The long ties allow for a secure fit under the chin, so it won't slip even during vigorous movement or running. Linen is a material you will love – it cools in summer, wicks away sweat effectively, and dries quickly. If you wear chainmail or a steel helmet, this coif (worn under a thicker padded arming cap or on its own) is crucial for protecting your hair and skin from abrasion.
Historical Context: Hygiene First
In the Middle Ages (approx. 13th–15th century), almost every man wore a similar coif, from the poorest serf to the king. Why? Apart from religious and social reasons (covering the hair), it was primarily a matter of hygiene. The coif could be easily washed, unlike expensive wool hoods or complex helmets. It acted as a barrier against dirt and lice. Knights wore it under their armour to prevent sweat from ruining the helmet padding and to stop metal from pulling their hair.

Care Instructions
Linen is a natural material that softens and becomes more comfortable with age and use. To keep the coif looking new for a long time, follow these rules:
- Washing: I recommend hand washing or using a gentle machine cycle (max 30 °C / 86 °F). Use a mild detergent.
- Drying: Never tumble dry linen products; they may shrink. Let the coif air dry naturally.
- Ironing: Linen creases naturally, which adds to the historical look. If you want it smooth, iron on medium heat or use steam, ideally while the fabric is still slightly damp.
Note: As this is a product made from natural material, slight variations in shade or fabric texture may occur. Other costume parts shown in the photos are not included in the package.
