Medieval Linen Veil – Oval Cut (11th–15th Century)
No High Medieval woman's costume is truly complete without a proper head covering. Whether you are portraying a pious nun, a respectable townswoman, a hardworking peasant, or a noble lady, this oval linen veil is the finishing touch to your historical attire. In the Middle Ages, loose, uncovered hair was the privilege of unmarried girls; for a married woman, the veil was a symbol of status, modesty, and protection. Further product information ...
Medieval Linen Veil – Oval Cut (11th–15th Century)
Universal Elegance of the Oval Shape
Unlike rectangular scarves, the oval cut offers a much more elegant drape without sharp corners sticking out at the sides. This shape was popular across centuries (from the 11th to the 15th century) for its versatility:
- You can wear it loosely thrown over a fillet (headband).
- It can be pinned to a barbette or wimple for complex layered styles.
- In summer, it serves as practical protection against sun and dust; in cold weather, it acts as an extra insulating layer.
Material: Nature That Breathes
We offer the veil in two material options in a natural, undyed shade. This off-white colour looks much more historical and authentic than modern stark white.
- 100% Linen (150 gsm): The most historically accurate choice. Linen wicks moisture perfectly, cools, and has an unmistakable texture.
- Cotton-Linen Blend (87/13, 180 gsm): A softer alternative that wrinkles less and drapes beautifully around the face.

Caring for Your Linen Veil
To keep your veil beautiful for a long time, hand wash it or use a gentle cycle in lukewarm water. Never use a tumble dryer. For the best look, iron the veil while it is still slightly damp or use a steamer. Store it loosely folded in a dry place.
Tip: For a perfect historical look, we recommend combining this veil with a linen fillet (headband) to prevent it from slipping on your hair.
