• As an Underdress (Chemise): This is its primary historical function. It was worn as an undergarment beneath outer dresses (like a kirtle or surcote). It protected expensive outer clothing from sweat and dirt, was easy to launder, and increased comfort. Perfect for serious reenactment and SCA.
• As a Standalone Dress: On hot summer days at a historical market or festival, it's invaluable. Simply add a belt and a pouch, and you have a complete costume for a humble villager, a herbalist, a tavern maid, or an elven scout at a LARP.
• As a Nightgown: Why sleep in ordinary pyjamas when you can dream of adventures? The comfortable material and loose fit make it a perfect nightgown.

A Glimpse into History: The Purpose of the Chemise

In the Middle Ages, hygiene was different, and washing clothes, especially those made of wool or brocade, was very difficult. The chemise, worn directly against the skin, was therefore an ingenious invention. It was made of linen, and later cotton – materials that could be washed easily and frequently. It absorbed sweat and body oils, thus protecting the expensive and colourful outer garments, which were washed minimally, if at all. Practically every woman owned one, from the humble peasant to the queen.

How to Care for Your Dress

To ensure this fantastic piece serves you for as long as possible, please follow these instructions:

• Washing: Machine wash on a gentle cycle, at a maximum of 40°C (104°F).
• Drying: Do not tumble dry! Air drying will help preserve the shape and quality of the fibres.
• Ironing: Iron on a medium heat setting (cotton/linen). For easier ironing, the fabric can be slightly damp.
• Bleaching: Do not use chemical bleach, as it can damage the fibres and alter the natural colour.
