Authentic Design Inspired by History
The cut of the Astrid dress is based on classic historical construction using rectangular and triangular panels, giving it an authentic look while allowing for great wearing variability.
Cut and Construction
The body of the dress consists of rectangular panels, with side gores (triangular inserts) providing the necessary fullness and freedom of movement to the skirt. The dress features a characteristic keyhole neckline and set-in sleeves. The bottom hem of the dress and the sleeve cuffs are finished with a neat double fold. The neckline is reinforced with a self-fabric facing, which is top-stitched to maintain its shape and increase durability. The inner seams are overlocked, and the armholes are also top-stitched. Although all seams are machine-sewn, the machine stitching is barely noticeable due to the careful selection of thread color and fabric texture.
Premium Wool Blend with a Unique Pattern
The dress is made from a high-quality wool blend, combining 80% wool and 20% nylon. This blend ensures optimal material properties. The fabric is woven in a broken diamond twill weave. Black and blue threads intertwine in this pattern, creating a visually appealing diamond effect with a rich texture. Twill weaves are generally more flexible than plain weaves, which contributes to greater comfort when worn and gives the dress a beautiful drape and natural movement.
Unbeatable Properties of Wool
Wool is a material our ancestors used for good reasons, and these reasons still hold true today:
- Warmth: Wool fibres trap air, creating a natural insulating layer that keeps you warm.
- Breathability: Thanks to its breathability, you will feel warm in the dress without overheating.
- Warm Even When Wet: Wool has the ability to repel water and can absorb up to 30% of its own weight in water before you start to feel damp. This means it will keep you drier and warmer for longer, even if you're caught in the rain.
- Durability: It is a long-lasting material that, with proper care, will serve you for many years.
- Safety: Wool is naturally flame-resistant, making it a safer choice compared to synthetic materials for historical events with campfires.
A Versatile Dress for Your Historical Role
The shape and style of this dress make it a very versatile part of your wardrobe. You can wear it as an outer dress or underneath a Viking apron dress (smokkr/hangerok). It is suitable for a wide range of uses:
- Historical reenactment events
- LARP and SCA events
- Historical and fantasy costumes
- Themed festivals and markets
Styling Options
Remember, accessories complete the outfit! The Astrid dress is an excellent base that you can adapt to your character and the occasion. Will you choose a simple cap and apron for the look of a common woman? Or a sturdy belt and boots for a tougher appearance? Or perhaps beautiful brooches and jewellery to portray a merchant, archer, warrior, or princess? The possibilities are endless, and it's up to you what story you create with this dress.
