Chainmail Coif with Brass Trim, 10mm, Butted Rings

Protection with a Touch of Elegance

This chainmail coif is meticulously crafted in the traditional 4-in-1 pattern, the standard for producing mail armour for centuries. The body of the coif is made from durable steel rings with a zinc-plated finish, which significantly increases its resistance to rust and simplifies maintenance. The most distinctive feature, however, is the decorative trim of genuine brass rings that lines the V-shaped face opening and the bottom edge of the mantle. This detail not only looks superb but also alludes to historical decorated armours that only wealthier warriors could afford.

The coif is designed to protect the entire head, neck, and shoulders, with a generous mantle covering the shoulders and upper chest. This is an affordable version made with butted (non-riveted) rings.

Who is This Coif Ideal For?

  • Beginner Re-enactors and Fighters: A perfect entry-level piece that offers a great look and functionality at an affordable price.
  • LARP and Cosplay: Enhance your knight, mercenary, or Viking warrior costume with an authentic-looking piece of armour.
  • Theatrical and Film Productions: Suitable as a durable and visually convincing prop.

From the History of the Chainmail Coif

The chainmail coif was an integral part of a European warrior's protective gear from the Early Middle Ages until the 14th century. It was worn either on its own or, more commonly, under an iron helmet (such as a nasal helm or a great helm) to protect the neck, nape, and sides of the face—areas the helmet alone did not cover. To increase comfort and shock absorption, a padded arming cap or coif was often worn underneath. Mail armour was flexible and relatively lightweight, making it a popular form of protection for many centuries.

How to Care for Your Coif

To ensure your new chainmail armour serves you for as long as possible and looks great, follow a few simple principles:

  • Storage: Always keep the coif in a dry environment. Leaving it in a damp place can lead to corrosion.
  • Maintenance: After each use, especially if it got wet or you sweated in it, let it dry thoroughly. Occasionally, lightly spray it with a preservative oil (e.g., WD-40 or Ballistol) and wipe off the excess with a cloth. This will renew the protective layer.
  • Brass Cleaning: The brass rings may develop a patina over time. If you prefer a shiny look, you can carefully clean them with a brass polish.
  • What to Avoid: Never leave the coif lying in damp grass or store it in an unventilated bag. Avoid using harsh cleaning agents that could damage the zinc-plated surface.
